The Great Nothing

The darkness was absolute, a crushing, infinite pressure that extinguished all sensation. It was not the absence of light, but the absence of everything. No sound echoed, no texture registered against skin that felt less like skin and more like a forgotten concept. Thought itself was a luxury, a fleeting ripple in a sea of absolute nullity. He was unmade, stripped bare of every defining characteristic, a phantom consciousness adrift in a void so complete that even the idea of “self” had dissolved into the velvety black. This was not death, for death implies an ending, a cessation. This was a dismantling, a meticulous erasure of being, leaving behind only a disembodied awareness, a ghost tethered to a machine that had ceased to function, experiencing a freedom that was the chilling byproduct of absolute non-existence. The sheer, unadulterated lack of everything was paradoxically liberating. There were no needs to fulfill, no pains to endure, no thoughts to be burdened by.
